WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mike Davis, founder and president of the Article III Project, issued the following statement after the FBI raided former President Donald J. Trump’s home:
“Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Chris Wray, and the other appointees in the Biden Justice Department are targeting President Biden’s political rival, with no legal basis or precedent. There’s simply no justification to raid the home of any former President over a records dispute with the National Archives.
“The President of the United States has the power to declassify any record he wants, so it’s pretextual legal nonsense for the Biden Justice Department to pretend President Trump broke any criminal statute by taking 15 boxes of his records with him when he left. Former presidents have government-paid staff and offices, Secret Service protection, security clearances, and secure facilities to store classified records, so there’s no legitimate concern that President Trump’s records could have gotten into the wrong hands.
“It’s noteworthy the Bush 43 and Trump Justice Departments took no action against President Bill Clinton when he stole White House furniture or when then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton set up her illegal home server of our nation’s most classified records.
“House Republicans must impeach Garland and Wray when they reclaim power in January for their unprecedented and destructive politicization of the Justice Department,” Davis said.
The Article III Project (A3P) was founded by veteran GOP operative and attorney Mike Davis, who, after helping win the Senate confirmation battles of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, developed the reputation as a “take-no-prisoners conservative eager to challenge the left with hardball tactics,” as reported in The New York Times. A3P defends constitutionalist judges, punches back on radical assaults on judicial independence (like court-packing) and opposes judicial and other nominees who are outside of the mainstream. Davis previously served as Chief Counsel for Nominations to Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary and led the Senate confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and a record number of circuit court judges.
