WASHINGTON — Mike Davis, Founder and President of the Article III Project, issued the following statement after today’s markup by the Senate Judiciary Committee on legislation concerning judicial ethics.
“Today’s vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee is a cynical ploy by Democrats to attack the independence of the Supreme Court, a separate and independent branch of government, because partisan Democrats don’t like today’s Supreme Court rulings. We have the first constitutionalist majority in 90 years, which guards our rights to speak, associate, worship, and protect ourselves. Today’s Supreme Court is the last line of defense, protecting everyday Americans from politicians’ power grabs and their supporters’ mob rule.
“Democrat politicians, who have never pretended to care about ethics for 90 years, now want to delegitimize and destroy today’s constitutionalist Supreme Court—because Democrat politicians don’t control it and don’t like its recent rulings. The first step was the Democrats’ organized, months-long partisan smear campaign against conservative justices.
“Today’s next step is attempting to impose an unnecessary and unconstitutional ethics regime, to punish and intimidate conservative Supreme Court justices into inappropriately recusing on key pending cases. The next step is radically transforming the Supreme Court, with court packing, impeachment, term limits, and jurisdiction stripping. As all 9 justices recently and publicly reaffirmed, the Supreme Court already has robust ethics rules and procedures. They work just fine, like they have for more than 90 years.
“If Senate Democrats actually cared about ethics, they’d stop running cover for a corrupt and compromised President of the United States—who stands credibly accused of taking tens of millions of dollars in foreign bribes and other corruption for what seems like everyone in Biden’s extended family. Except, of course, his 4-year-old granddaughter he refuses to even acknowledge. And if Senate Democrats actually cared about ethics, they’d reprimand Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) for his continued and reprehensible membership in his all-white beach club in Rhode Island. Today’s vote has nothing to do with ethics; it’s all about power,” said Davis.
